The Suffolk University Athletic Department held their annual awards recognition banquet on Wednesday April 28th as all 13 teams handed out awards for their 2009-2010 seasons.
Baseball captain senior Bobby Barrett was awarded the department’s 2010 Alumni Charles Law Student-Athlete Award. In 1946 Charles Law established Suffolk University's Athletic program and remained as the University Director for 33 years. Law coached basketball at Suffolk for 30 years, winning the admiration of his players and peers as "Dean of New England Basketball Coaches" and directing his last two teams to NCAA Division III post-season tournament competition, completing his career with 295 victories. Serving also as the President and Treasurer of the New England Basketball Coaches Association, Charles Law was nominated for membership to the Citizen Savings Athletic Foundation's Coaches Hall of Fame. In honor of the late Charles Law, this award is given to a student-athlete who has excelled in academics and athletics.
Barrett is a two-time captain of Suffolk’s Baseball team and was a three-time first-team All-Conference selection by the Great Northeast Athletic Conference. In 2009 as a junior, Barrett was an All-America Honorable Mention selection by D3Baseball.com for a season that saw him lead Suffolk to their fourth ever NCAA Tournament appearance. That year Barrett set the single season record for RBI with 68 as the Rams finished the year with a 30-11 record. As a communications major Barrett maintains a 3.2 GPA and plans to attend Graduate School at Suffolk University in the fall of 2010 following the completion of his undergraduate degree.
Volleyball captain Kelsey Armstrong-Hahn was awarded the department’s Charles Melanson Unsung Heroine Award for her work both on and off the court. Kelsey has been a four-year start for Suffolk’s Volleyball team and served as a captain in three of them. Her junior year she was named team MVP and was one of Suffolk’s leading players as a senior both offensively and defensively. She has also contributed to the Suffolk University Athletic Department off the court serving a Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) President in 2010. Kelsey has also done considerable work outside the classroom. Her resume consists of: serving as an English teach for Latino immigrants, volunteering with the Andean Bear Conservation Project in Ecuador, an election observer in the Presidential elections in El Salvador in 2009, studies in Uganda on human trafficking and rehabilitation of child soldiers. She has also studied abroad in Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua. She has also attended the NCAA National Student-Athlete Leadership Development conference. Is a member of Pi Sigma Alpha, National Political Science Nation Honors Society, Delta Alpha Pi Society,and the Academic Honors Society. Along with her lengthy list of creditials Kelsey maintains a 3.81 GPA earning Dean’s List High Honors as a major in International Affairs with a minor in Spanish.
Suffolk also handed out their annual Departmental Recogntion Award to Abdel Ouedraogou. Abdel, a senior from Guinea Bissau is an International Affairs major. Over the past four years, Abdel has worked countless home games serving as photographer for both basketball teams and hockey. Recognized for the his gentlemanly nature, warm smile and welcoming personality, Abdel’s contributions to Suffolk’s sports programs have not gone unnoticed.
