Softball Splits with Pine Manor

Chestnut Hill, MA - Suffolk University Softball (8-9, 5-1 GNAC) collected 21 hits on the day as they split a GNAC double header with Pine Manor College on Saturday. The Rams were victorious 7-5 in game one as senior Jess Ferreira (Cambridge, MA) went 3-3 to lead the Rams to victory. Suffolk fell 5-2 in game two as Pine Manor's Tara Doehler (Lakeville, MA) held the Rams to just two runs in a 5-2 Gators' victory.
Game 1
Suffolk jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in game one as senior Marie Trainor (Winthrop, MA) homered in her second straight game to put the Rams on top in the first inning.
Pine Manor would answer in the bottom half of the second plating a pair, as junior Courtney Wallace (Steep Falls, ME) hit her ninth home run of the season to even the game, and then junior Michelle Myers (Freeport, NY) doubled in a run to give the Gators a 2-1 lead.
The Rams would answer in the next half inning putting up three runs, highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of Jess Ferreira. Ferreira would later come around that inning to score on a Pine Manor error as the Rams took a 4-2 lead and would hold on to it for good. Ferreira knocked in her second run of the game in the sixth as Suffolk would bring across three more runs. Senior Rebecca Schalit (Miami, FL) also had an RBI single in the inning as Suffolk jumped out to a 7-2 advatange.
Pine Manor would not go quietly however as they managed to hit two home runs in the bottom of the seventh. Senior Patty Pabon (Bronx, NY) and freshman Jackie Mannino (Little Silver, NJ) each went deep as the Gators score three runs in the bottom of the seventh. After Mannino's home run, Courtney Wallace would single, bringing the tying run to the plate with two outs, but Suffolk starter Brook Hirschfeld (Winchester, MA) got a ground ball for the game's final out to pick up her second win of the year.
Ferreira and Trainor each finished the game with three hits for the Rams, while sophomore Monica Cioffi (East Boston, MA) had a pair of hits in the Rams' win.
Game 2
Freshamn Tara Doehler (Lakeville, MA) held the Rams to just one earned run in game two as Pine Manor managed to split the double header with Suffolk. Pine Manor collected 11 hits in the game off Suffolk starter Elizabeth Galvin (Medway, MA) as they picked up their ninth win of the season. All but one starter in Pine Manor's lineup had a hit in game two.
Suffolk had a 2-1 edge going into the 5th, but Pine Manor would score four runs on six hits. Patty Pabon evened up the game at 2-2 with a double and then came around to score and take the lead on a single by junior Veronica Vozzollo (Bellmore, NY).
Both Trainor and Ferriera each finished the game with two hits a piece for the Rams. Ferreira now has 197 career hits. The Rams play again tomorrow as they host Norwich University in a GNAC double header beginning at 12:00 pm at Popoulo Field in Boston's North End.
