The Suffolk University Rams took two games from Simmons College on Wednesday winning both ends of the double header in their final at-bats. Senior Jess Ferreira (Cambridge, MA) hit a 3-run homer in the bottom of the seventh with two outs to give the Rams a 6-5 win in the night cap. Freshman Cali Loura (Farmington, CT) had the big hit in game one driving in two runs with a single in the bottom half of the eighth.
Game 1
With two outs and the bases loaded, freshman Cali Loura singled home two runs to give the Rams a 5-4 win in extra innings in game one of a GNAC double header. After intentionally walking Jess Ferreira, and pitching around senior Kellie Hurlock (East Lyme, CT), Loura delivered the big hit as the Rams brought runners home for the second time in as many innings with two outs.
Trailing 3-2 in the seventh, senior Rebecca Barnett (Hull, MA) doubled off the left field fence with one out. After retiring the next hitter, junior Valerie Liberatore (Chelsea, MA) doubled down the left field line with two outs to draw the game even at 3-3.
Simmons put up a 3-1 lead in the fifth as they chipped away for two runs. Sophomore Annie Thompson (Pacific Palisades, CA) doubled to tie the game at 2-2 and then came around to score on a throwing error to give the Sharks the lead.
Junior Sammi Letizio (Windham, NH) pitched well in the loss for the Sharks. Letizio had six strikeouts in 7 2/3 innings of work. Junior Lead Dergerian (Boylston, MA) finished the game 3-4 with a double and RBI.
Freshman Carissa Roche (Swampscott, MA) picked up her third win of the mound, only allowing two earned runs of her eight innings of work. Loura and Barnett each had two hits for Suffolk.
Game 2
Game two went back and forth as each team traded runs for the first three innings. Jess Ferreira got the Rams on the board in the first with a sacrifice fly, and then homered in the third inning to even the game at 3-3.
Simmons jumped out to a 5-3 lead in the fifth as freshman Ashley Wheeler (Nashua, NH) connected on her third home run of the year to put the Sharks up.
Senior Rachel Misuraca (Gloucester, MA) got the Rams started in the seventh, singling with one out. Sophomore Monica Cioffi (East Boston, MA) followed up with another single to bring the winning run to the plate. Ferreira came up with two, and crushed a pitched over the tall left field fence for her second home run of the game. The senior shortstop finished the game driving in five of Suffolk's six runs. Misuraca had Suffolk's other RBI. Monica Cioffi finished game two going 3-4 for the Rams, who now move to 8-2 in GNAC play this spring.
The Rams will be back in action on Friday as they take on Emerson College in a GNAC double header, as part of Suffolk Spirit Night. Game one will begin at 3:00 pm, while there will be a pre-game barbeque beginning at 2:00 pm. The games will take place down at Popoulo Field in the North End.
