Somerville, MA - The Suffolk University Women's Soccer team were four minutes away from their first conference win of the season until junior Sam Gigliotti (Wilton, CT) connected for the game-tying goal off of a corner kick from senior Leanna Wiesslender (New Haven, CT) late in the second-half as both teams played to a 1-1 tie.
Suffolk sophomore Leslie Hayden (Ross, CA) scored the game's first goal in the game's thirty-fourth minute as she kicked in a loose ball off a rebound in front of the Falcon's net to give the Rams an early lead. The goal was Hayden's 18th on the season, a new career high.
Junior Emily Joyce (Easton, MA) continued her strong play in net, making nine saves over 110 minutes of play as the Rams played to their third tie in GNAC play in 2009.
The Falcons outshot the Rams in the game 31-11, but could not capitalize on their scoring opportunities. Freshman Danielle Figueroa (Bridgeport, CT) had two of the best chances for Albertus Magnus. The first coming with seven minutes left in regulation as her shot struck off the cross bar after being set up by Gigliotti for what could have been the Falcons' first goal of the game. Figueroa had another golden opportunity late in overtime but she shot sailed wide left of the Rams' goal. Wiesslender also missed a chance to give the Falcons the win, two minutes later as she was left alone in front of the net, but her shot also went wide of the goal. Albertus outshot the Rams 6-1 in the two extra frames.
Suffolk's lone shot could have turned out to be a potential game-winner as Hayden came close to striking again with just 1:20 left to play in the game as she broke out down the wing alone but her shot was stopped by Falcons' goalkeeper Christina Oddo (East Haven, CT).
Oddo made 7 saves in net for Albertus Magnus.
Albertus Magnus will take on Newbury College in a non-league game on Monday at 3:00pm. Suffolk will conclude the 2009 season as they host Pine Manor College in a rescheduled game on Tuesday at
