Men's Tennis Continue Strong Start to Season


The Suffolk University Men's Tennis team continued their strong start to the 2012 season with a 9-0 sweep over the Rhode Island College Anchormen on Tuesday evening. With the win the Rams now propel to a 4-0 mark to start the young season.

The Rams jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead as they swept all three doubles matches in the contest. In four matches this season, Suffolk is now a perfect 12-0 in tandem play. Senior Chris Staley (London, England) and freshman Mark Winkler (Caracas, Venezuela) earned the first victory over the evening with an 8-3 set win in the top spot. Senior Albert Buruga (Bradenton, Fla.) and junior Harlan Strader (Marblehead, Mass.) moved to 3-0 on the season as a duo with an 8-1 victory, while sophomore Drew Reilly (Boston, Mass.) and junior Dachuan Zhu (Beijing, China) combined for an 8-2 victory.

In singles competition, the Rams earned victories in all six matches without losing a set.

Staley was the victor in the top singles match. Playing in the number one position for the first time this season, Staley cruised to a 6-0, 6-3 victory. Winkler picked up simliar scores in the second single match for his first victory of the season. Sophomore Aaron Lau (Hong Kong, China) earned a victory in the three position with 6-2, 6-0 scores while Strader was a 6-3, 6-2 winner.

In the fifth spot, Buruga moved to a 3-0 record on the young season as he won the lone match set 8-0, while sophomore Vassilli Stroganov (Hoersholm, Germany) picked up his team-best fourth win of the year with an 8-4 win in the sixth and final game.

Suffolk will be back in action on Thursday evening as they host UMass Boston at Buckingham, Browne and Nichols at 6:30pm.
