BOSTON, Mass. – The Emmanuel Women’s Basketball Team
downed cross-town rival Suffolk University, 69-55, in Great
Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action played in the Jean
Yawkey Center on Wednesday night. The Saints scored 23 points off
Suffolk turnovers en route to the 14-point victory. With the win,
Emmanuel improves to 10-6 overall and 4-0 in the conference, while
Suffolk drops to 8-7 on the year and 2-3 in the GNAC.
The Saints jumped out to a quick 10-point lead to start the game,
up 14-4 at the sixteen-minute mark. Emmanuel hit 7 first-half
three-pointers, including three in a 2-minute stretch, to rattle
the visiting Rams. The Saints shot 41.5% (17-41) from the floor in
the opening half and forced 16 Suffolk turnovers to take a 21-point
lead into the locker room, 45-24.
The Saints maintained the spread until about mid-way through the
second half. Suffolk then went on a 12-4 run and the Rams trailed
by twelve (60-48) with 6:12 remaining. Emmanuel committed just 13
fouls in the contest, a near team-low this season. Despite being
out-rebounded, 50-40, the Saints were able to come away with the
solid victory.
Junior guard Iman Davis (Toms River, N.J.) led Emmanuel with a
game-high 16 points and team-highs in rebounds (8) and assists (6).
Sophomore shooting guard Kristin LeBel dropped 15 points, including
hitting 3 of 7 from three-point range, while dishing out 5 assists.
The Saints, who finished with 8 three-balls for the game, shot
44.4% from behind the arc.
Suffolk was led by senior forward Meghan Tracey (Rehoboth,
Mass.), who recorded a double-double with 14 points on, 7 for 9
shooting, and 11 rebounds. Freshman forward Meghan Black (Roslindale,
Mass.) hit 7 of 8 shots form the line and finished with 9 points
for the visitors.
Emmanuel will play again on Saturday (1/24), when the Saints host
the Blue Jays of Saint Joseph College (CT) in a 1pm start. Suffolk
will travel to Northfield, Vt. on Saturday to take on the Cadets of
Norwich University in a 1pm tip.
