Baseball Holds Off Endicott, 3-2, in Game 1

Relief pitchers Rich Giandrea and Jake Flax each retired the side in their inning of relief in the sixth and seventh, respectively to lock up a 3-2, victory over Endicott in the opener of a non-conference doubleheader at North Field Friday afternoon.

BEVERLY, Mass. – Relief pitchers Rich Giandrea and Jake Flax each retired the side in their inning of relief in the sixth and seventh, respectively to lock up a 3-2, victory over Endicott in the opener of a non-conference doubleheader at North Field Friday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 After Endicott's starter Will Ferreira sat down the Rams in order through the first three innings, Suffolk's bats got going in the fourth. Brady Chant led off with a base-hit to left field before Nik San Antonio drew a base-on-balls to advance the senior centerfielder to second. Chant turned on his wheels on Seth Coiley's single to center and open up the scoring before a walk by Greg Speliotis chucked the bags. Two batters later Blasé Cormier collected an RBI with a walk of his own and the Gulls made a change on the hill with Alexander Mandrus coming out of the pen. A sac fly to center field by Tim Brigham brought in Coiley to give Suffolk a 3-0 cushion.  

The Gulls responded in the home half of the fourth as Michael Casciano opened the inning with a solo shot to left field to trim the margin to two, 3-1.  

Endicott cut the Rams' edge to one, 3-2, in the bottom of the fifth, but was kept there as Giandrea came in to deal a three-up, three-down sixth before Flax handled the seventh. 

PITCHERS PICTURE

  • Kevin Sinatra improved to 4-3 after letting up a pair of runs on six hits through 5.0 innings with three strikeouts. 
  • Giandrea's inning of scoreless relief re one K, swinging, while Flax earned his fifth save of the season with 1.0 inning with one punchouts. 
  • Ferreira fell on the hill for the Gulls after allowing three runs on two hits and three walks with two strikeouts. 
  • Mandrus saw 1.2 innings of scoreless action with one hit and one walked allowed to go with one strikeout. 
  • Victor Molle and Will Bryant each dealt 1.0 innings for Endicott. Molle had one K, while Bryant sat down a pair of hitters.  

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

  • Chant, Coiley and Rich Gilbride each recorded one hit apiece for Suffolk.  
  • Chant and Coiley each scored one run with San Antonio also crossing home once. 
  • Coiley tallied a RBI on a single with Cormier picking up a RBI off a walk. 
  • Brigham rounded out the Rams with RBI thanks to a sac fly.  

NOTEWORTHY

  • Suffolk strung it second straight win over the Gulls to mark the first time the Rams took down Endicott in back-to-back games since 2016. 
  • The Rams trimmed the Gulls all-time series lead, moving to 11-15 all-time versus Endicott, in a series, which dates back to 1999. 
  • Chant made his 174th appearance in a Suffolk uniform, which marks the most games played by an individual in Suffolk baseball's storied history. 
  • With his fifth save of the season he sits tied for second in a single-season in with Joe Robillard in the season annals, while he sits tied for second all-time on the career annals as well with fourth other Rams including current head coach Anthony Del Prete and assistant coach Jhonneris Mendez with six saves.
