Walsh ’76 Elected to NEIBA Hall of Fame

BOSTON – Former Suffolk baseball head coach and Suffolk University alum, the late Joe Walsh has earned induction into the NEIBA Hall of Fame, the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association announced Friday.

As Suffolk's skipper from 1980 to 1995, Walsh assembled over 220 victories and led the Rams to three Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) tournament appearances. In his final season on the blue-and-gold bench, he guided the squad to a 26-11 record, the most single-season wins in program history at the time, which earned him Division III Coach of the Year distinction for the New England region that year.

Walsh not only led the Rams on the diamond for 15 seasons he also served as Suffolk's head coach for women's basketball and cross country during his tenure on Beacon Hill.

Prior to coaching the Rams, Walsh was a Ram himself from 1972-76. The three-sport athlete at Suffolk earning varsity letterwinner status in baseball, basketball and cross country. He earned his degree in philosophy in 1976.

In 2009, Walsh was inducted into Suffolk University's Athletics Hall of Fame. The 1984 Suffolk baseball team, which he coached, was also enshrined into the Rams Hall of Fame as part of the University's second class. That team was the first Suffolk baseball team to earn a postseason bid in program history.

Walsh's Suffolk University Hall of Fame induction speech was filled with anecdotes focused around the obstacles he faced as a player and a baseball coach, while at Suffolk, but it was his charisma and fiery personality that helped the Suffolk squad and his players adopt the nickname the "Mutts."

After Suffolk, Walsh moved on to Harvard University where he led the Crimson for 17 seasons from 1996 to 2021. Harvard's first full-time and first endowed baseball coach. The Joseph J. O'Donnell'67 Head Coach for Harvard Baseball, guided the Crimson to five Ivy League titles and as many appearances in the NCAA Tournament, reaching the regional semifinals twice.  In 1998 he coached Harvard to a school-record 36 wins and a national ranking of 24th en route to Northeast Region Division I Coach of the Year by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) for that campaign, as well as a year prior.

Walsh's baseball resume also features a decade affiliation with the prestigious Cape Cod Baseball league from 1988-98 and was a usual batting practice pitcher for the Red Sox at Fenway Park.

In 32 years as a collegiate head baseball coach, Walsh posted an overall record of 569-564-3.

Walsh's coaching career ended early as he passed away suddenly at the age of 58 July 31, 2012.

The NEIBA will honor the Hall of Fame inductees and major award winners prior to the start of the 49th Annual NEIBA Joe Walsh All-Star Game brought to you by On Deck Sports, Monday, June 3.
