WENHAM, Mass. – Suffolk baseball rallied late to come back and take down Gordon, 8-6, in Conference of New England play at J. Tec White Field.
THE BASICS
SCORE: Suffolk 8 | Gordon 6
RECORDS: Suffolk (13-21, 6-8 CNE) | Gordon (15-21, 6-10 CNE)
HOW IT HAPPENED
Max Martin doubled down the left field line to lead off the game and Colin Flynn walked to put two ducks in the pond. Alex Sorenti-Burns brought the first run of the day in a single to left and Chris Cimino and Max Iorio followed suit with back-to-back one-run base hits to give Suffolk a 3-0 lead.
A two-run single to left center by Jonathan McIntyre in the bottom of the first sliced the Rams to one, 3-2.
The Fighting Scots fought ahead 4-3 in the home half of the second behind two hits and one blue-and-gold fielding mishap.
Suffolk responded in the top of the third. Flynn singled through the right side to get the inning underway and swiped second to get into scoring position. Iorio barreled a double to right to score Flynn and make it a 4-4 game.
Gordon took a two-run lead in the bottom of the fourth thanks to a Tyler Wilson single followed by back-to-back doubles.
The see-saw action carried into the top of the fifth as the blue-and-gold chipped the distance down to one behind Cimino's solo shot.
Suffolk had chances in the sixth and seventh, but it would not be until the top of the eighth that it made its move. A couple hit by pitches and a loud out by Max Martin put Rams on second and third with two outs. Flynn roped a double up the middle to clear the bags and send the blue-and-gold in front, 7-6.
One insurance tally came in the top of the ninth for Suffolk thanks to a costly error by the Fighting Scots. An Iorio single through the left side was sandwiched around two outs. Sebastian Lampert struck out swinging, but the ball got away from Gordon's catcher Jacob Hitchcock, which allowed Lampert to reach first safely. Iorio, meanwhile, was cruising around second and sliding into third when Hitchcock's throw down was off the mark, which allowed Iorio to come in and extend the edge to two, 8-6.
Jack Raimo came in to shove for John McDevitt. After an error that allowed Gordon's lead-off to reach safely, Raimo retired the side to preserve the crucial victory.
