THE BASICS
SCORE: Suffolk 1 | Curry 4
RECORDS: Suffolk (2-17, 1-4 CNE) | Curry (5-9, 3-2 CNE)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- A one-out solo shot to left in the top of the first by Brandon Mantilla-Mercado gave the Colonels an early 1-0 lead.
- Suffolk locked things at 1-all at its first turn at the plate. Jack Mihalchik barreled a triple to right center and used a productive ground out to second by Cole Hilliard to even the playing field.
- Curry clawed its way back in front in the top of the fifth. Taylor Diaz singled and moved to second on a passed ball. Nick Krise put the ball in play in the left side that was a tough play for Mike Mullaney to make. Suffolk's third baseman attempted stopped the ball from getting through, but on his throw to first it was Hilliard's head, which allowed the go-ahead run in Diaz to score.
- The Rams had a chance to make up some ground in the bottom of the sixth with runners on second and third with two outs and Sam Armbruster at the plate with a full count. Henry Marino made a move to second and picked off Hilliard successfully to keep the score still in the Colonels' favor.
- Suffolk stopped Curry from adding an insurance run in the top of the seventh on a relay play at the plate. Blake Fuller singled and put on his running shoes when Michael Frausto barreled a base hit down the left field line. Stand-up defense from the blue-and-gold saw Vasili Scangas throw in to Luke Thornton at second, who wasted no time to get the ball to Ross Treubig at home in time to tag a sliding Fuller for the third out of the frame and keep it 2-1.
- Curry did manage to lengthen its lead in the top of the eighth behind Mantilla-Mercado's second bomb of the day. The right-handed batters collected two RBI on the jack to extend the distance to 4-1.
- Suffolk stranded a pair of runners in the eighth and went down in order in the ninth to suffer the setback.
