EAST BOSTON – Down four going into the bottom of the ninth, Suffolk baseball managed to score three and put the tying run third, it would not be enough to come back and take down Curry as the Colonels closed out the nightcap of a Conference of New England (CNE) double feature, 6-5, Saturday at East Boston Memorial Park.
THE BASICS
SCORE: Suffolk 5 | Curry 6
RECORDS: Suffolk (2-18, 1-5 CNE) | Curry (6-9, 4-2 CNE)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The teams exchanged on run in the second. Sam Armbruster walked and advanced to second on Luke Thornton's base hit to center. Armbruster tagged up and found himself on third when Shayne King flew out to center. A double steal allowed Armbruster to score and lock things at 1-all.
- The Colonels found their back in front in the top of the third with two runs on two hits and one Suffolk error that put the blue-and-gold in a 3-1 hole.
- Curry continued to score with two more in the sixth and one in the seventh to extend the margin to 6-1.
- The Rams made up one run in the bottom of the seventh. Luke Thornton singled advanced to second on Ross Treubig's walk and scored courtesy of Noah Greco's single to left.
- The bottom of the ninth was interesting in Suffolk's favor. With two outs and Rams on first and second, Jack Mihalchik placed a ball between first and second that the Colonels' right side infield could not make play on to let a run come in and put Colin Flynn on third. A balk allowed Flynn to walk in before Cole Hilliard wore a pitch to bring the winning run to the plate in Armbruster. The senior rocked a single to right center to pull the host within one. With the tying and winning runs in the corners, respectively, Thornton came up to bat. The freshman swung at the first pitch he saw and grounded out to third, which sealed Suffolks' setback fate.
