BOSTON – Head coach Jeff Juron has added Matthew Droney to the Suffolk men's basketball staff as an assistant coach, he announced Tuesday.
Droney arrives in Boston following a one-year stint as an assistant coach at Vassar College. Responsible for player development and assisting in film exchange, recruiting and team administrative duties, Droney helped lead the Brewers to a Liberty League postseason berth.
He earned his first collegiate coaching appointment after his senior season at Babson College where he led the Beavers to the 2017 NCAA DIII National Championship as captain. In his time at Babson, Droney helped lead the Beavers to a record of 83-11, two appearances in the Division III Final Four and a pair of New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) crowns.
"I'm thrilled to add Matt to our staff," Juron said. "Matt's work ethic, familiarity with Boston and experience at the highest levels of Division III basketball will serve him and our program well. Our players will benefit from Matt's strong understanding of the game and his ability to connect. He will have an immediate positive impact."
No stranger to Boston, Droney made a name for himself at Catholic Memorial High School in West Roxbury, Massachusetts. The two-year captain picked up Boston Herald Dream Team and Boston Globe Super Team accolades as a junior and senior, as well as Catholic League Most Valuable Player laurels in 2012-13. The 1,000-point scorer earned three All-Catholic League honors over the course of his career.
Droney's coaching resume includes stints at Massachusetts Premier Courts, where he coordinated drills and activities along with ensuring positive camp experiences, and 94 Fifth Basketball Technologies, where he provided intensive, customized workouts for small groups.
In addition to his responsibilities on Juron's staff, Droney, who earned his Bachelor of Science from Babson's School of Business in May 2017, will further his education at Suffolk pursuing a Masters of Arts in Higher Education, while working as a graduate assistant in the Athletic Department.
