Bovarnick Helps Team USA to Gold Medal at Maccabiah Games

JERUSALEM – Suffolk men's hockey's Jarret Bovarnick aided the Open USA Men's Hockey Team to a gold medal at the 21st Maccabiah Games at Pais Arena in Israel July 13-23.

Bovarnick backstopped the red, white and blue to an unbeaten mark through the three-game round robin, which featured victories over Israel (10-2), Canada (9-1) and the Maccabiah Europe Open (17-2).

As the top seed, the US skated past Europe in the semis, 10-3, with Bovarnick between the pipes to punch its ticket to the finals where the stars and stripes would skate against Canada. With the Ram in net once again, the United States defeated its neighbor to the north, 5-1, to capture the first-ever gold for the USA in men's hockey open at the Maccabiah Games.

Bovarnick joined the long and proud tradition of Jewish athletes who have represented the United States of America at the Maccabiah Games in Israel for the first time. The Maccabiah Games are the central sporting event of the Jewish People and the 21st edition featured over 10,000 athletes representing 60 countries in 38 sports.

The Boca Raton, Florida, native earned his place on the team after open tryouts in the Great Philadelphia area last summer, June 11-13, 2021.

A rising senior on Suffolk's squad, the netminder transferred into a blue-and-gold sweater mid-term in the 2019-20 season. In his time in Boston, he has taken the ice 11 times with five starts to his credit. In just over 420 minutes played, he has built a 4.11 GAA and .872 save percentage.
