Men's Soccer Pick Up First Win of Season

The Suffolk University Men's Soccer team (1-1 overall) picked up their first win of the 2011 season with a 4-0 shutout over the Newbury College Nighthawks (0-2 overall) in the consolation game of the Regis Pride Tournament on Sunday afternoon.

Freshman Andres Cohen (Caracas, Venezuela) got the scoring started for the Rams converting on a penalty kick in the game's tenth minute and that would be all freshman goalkeeper James Potter (North Kingston, R.I.) would need as the Rams earned their first win of the young season.

Sophomore James Harvey (Reading, Mass.) would help build the Rams lead to 2-0 as he scored with a minute and a half remaining in the first half as he converted on a pass from freshman Papa Mbaye (Dakar, Senegal).

It would take the Rams two and a half minutes into the second half to score their third goal of the game as freshman Niang Djibril (Dakar, Senegal) scored an unassisted goal as he spun in a shot from the end line and freshman Daour Diagne (Dakar, Senegal) put the game away scoring the Rams' fourth goal of the contest in the 76th minute as he and freshman Olivier Dacaosta (Dakar, Senegal) came down the Nighthawks zone with a give and go to seal the contest.

Potter made three saves in 77minutes of action, while freshman Nicholas Haddad (Worcester, Mass.) played the final 12 minutes and did not see any action.

Suffolk rebounded from a 2-1 double overtime loss on Saturday to host Regis College.

Freshman Babacar Sembene (Dakar, Senegal) scored the Rams lone goal as he put home a pass from Cohen twenty minutes into the contest.

Suffolk fell behind early as the Pride's Nicholas Tavares scored just ten minutes into the game.

Neither team could score for the following 97 minutes before Josh Fidalgo put home the game winner with just two minutes remaining in the contest to give the Pride their first victory of the season.

Potter made five saves in the losing effort for the Rams.

Suffolk will play their home opener this Wednesday at George Dilboy  Stadium as they host UMass-Boston at 8:30pm.
