BIDDEFORD, Maine – The Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) is pleased to announce that men's track and field has been elevated to CCC Championship status.
The decision was made by the CCC Board of Directors at their annual fall meeting and increases the conference's championship offerings to 20.
"Elevating the sport of men's track and field to full championship status strengthens the CCC and ensures that another group of outstanding student-athletes will enjoy an enhanced collegiate athletic experience," said CCC Commissioner Gregg M. Kaye. "It has long been a priority of the conference and our member institutions to provide the best possible participatory experience to all student-athletes and to be able to sponsor a 20th championship sport is an extremely significant milestone for the CCC, as we were at 14 championships sports not too long ago."
There will be five varsity teams competing in the CCC Men's Track & Field Championship this year. They are Gordon, Nichols, Roger Williams, Suffolk, and Wentworth.
With the sport's elevation to CCC Championship status, men's track and field student-athletes will have the added benefits of weekly and postseason awards. Their results from the conference championship meet will also factor into the CCC Men's All-Sports Trophy competition.
The conference has officially sponsored a track and field event since 2007. The event was originally held as an invitational with competitions for both men's and women's teams. As sport sponsorship increased on the women's side, the women's track and field competition was elevated to CCC Championship status in the spring of 2018. Due to limited participation, the men's meet remained an invitational.
Roger Williams won last year's CCC Men's Track and Field Invitational, while the Rams finished fifth.
Suffolk's 2022 season is set to get underway next Saturday, March 26 at the BSU Bears Invitational.
