FT. MYERS, Fla. – The Suffolk softball team split a doubleheader Wednesday as it continued play at the Gene Cusic Classic. In game one, the Rams fell to Wisconsin Superior, 4-2, before defeating Augusburg, 6-2, in the night cap.
Suffolk (5-1) out hit Wisconsin Superior (9-4) , 7-6, but the Yellow Jackets struck at the right times, took an early lead and never looked back.
Heading into the sixth down 4-0, the Rams rallied a comeback. Sydney Littlefield, Jill Pulek and Devlin Frost each hit singles with Frost's brining in Littlefield of Suffolk's first run of the day. Pulek scored on a fielder's choice, but Suffolk's momentum did not continue.
Roles reversed in the second contest of the day as Suffolk jumped ahead by two in the first. Meredith Ball led off with a single and Littlefield followed suit, pushing Ball to third in the process. With Frost at the plate, Littlefield sniped second and Frost's sac fly plated Ball. With one out, Pulek lit a bomb to left field, but it was caught, in the meantime Ball crossed home plate to give the Rams a 2-0 advantage.
The score stood still for four complete innings before Augusburg made things interesting in the top of the sixth with two runs to knot the game at 2-all. The Rams responded and do so in style with a four-run bottom half inning to regain the lead, 4-2.
With the bases loaded Evelyn Marquis drew a walk that brought in Morgan Parmeter. Another walk, this time Ball was granted first, brought in Nicole Isakson, and a two RBI single to center field by Littlefield push the score to 4-2.
Suffolk controlled the Auggies in the top of the seventh to secure its fifth victory of the season.
Littlefield's offensive onslaught paced the Rams as the sophomore went 3-for-4, driving in two and scoring once herself. Madison Eucalitto was the only other player in blue-and-gold with multiple hits as the sophomore went 2-for-3 on the day.
Suffolk wraps up its action in the south tomorrow with familiar New England foods UMass Dartmouth (9 a.m.) and Castleton (1 p.m.).
