Worcester State Run Rules Softball in Game 2

WORCESTER, Mass. – Suffolk softball fell to Worcester State, 14-5, in mercy-rule fashion in the nightcap of a double feature Tuesday at Rahl Raymond Diamond.

THE BASICS
SCORE: Suffolk 5 | Worcester State 15
RECORDS: Suffolk (15-18) | Worcester State (21-12)

HOW IT HAPPENED
In a case of déjà vu, Suffolk found itself down three after the first frame.

The teams exchanged runs in the second stanza to keep the gap at three. Suffolk's run was scored by Julia Mills, who reached on a fielder's choice and stole second and came in behind Lily Newhall's double down the left field line.

The Rams managed to level the playing field in the top of the third. Singles by Catherine Carignan and Giavanna Bellino were wrapped between two outs. Ella Turnbull cleared the bases with a double to left, before she scored herself thanks to a base hit by Mills that made it a new game, 4-4.

A lopsided 10-spot by the Lancers in the home half of the third put Suffolk in a 14-4 hole.

Avery Carvalho sent a solo shot to center field to trim the gap to nine, 14-5.

WSU went down in order and was held scoreless for the first time in the bottom of the fifth to keep it a nine-run margin as the game headed to the top of the fifth.

Suffolk was unable to capitalize on one base runner in the top of the fifth, however, to suffer the mercy-rule setback.
