BOSTON – Jenni-Rose DiCecco already sealed up her spot in the Suffolk women's basketball record book as the freshman garnered her seventh GNAC Corvias Rookie of the Week award, the league office announced Monday afternoon. The accolade comes after a 12.5 ppg, 4.0 rpg and 2.0 spg effort in a 1-1 week for the Rams.
DiCecco displaces her teammate Alexis Hackett as the most decorated Rams freshman in recent history with her seventh conference weekly accolade. Hackett set the tone a year ago with six nods as the league's best rookie over a seven day stretch. DiCecco matches a conference record (through the 2008-09 season), which was set by Saint Joseph's (Maine)'s Morgan Cahill in 2012-13.
After a tough 73-45 setback to the Monks to open last season, Suffolk put on a comeback show in front of its home crowd Saturday afternoon. Trailing by 13 points at the midway point of the third period, the Rams charged back to regain the lead, 56-54, heading into the fourth and capture the 75-71 thrilling victory. In the showdown, the Falmouth, Massachusetts, helped lead the charge as one of three Rams in double figures with 16 points, on a 33.3 shooting clip (6-18) from the field. Half of her four steals came during the Rams' run with the floor general also contributing on the glass with five boards, including four on the defensive end.
Overall, DiCecco has helped Suffolk to a 17-6 record and a 10-4 mark in conference action this season as she is second on the squad in scoring, 14.2 ppg, first in assists and steals, 3.8 apg and 2.1 spg, and fourth in rebounds, 5.0 rpg.
Her seventh honor by the conference marks the eighth of her career as she also took home NEWBA Rookie of the Week accolades Dec. 4. As a team, Suffolk has been recognized on a weekly basis 13 times this year with Georgia Bourikas collecting the nation's top honor of USBWA National Player of the Week, along with league player of the week status Dec. 12, while freshman Jordan Hipwell garnered the conference's rookie of the week on two occasions.
DiCecco and the Rams will wrap up regular season action this week. Suffolk first stops by Rivier Tuesday, Feb. 13 for a 7 p.m. tilt, before entertain Saint Joseph (Conn.) inside Regan Gymnasium Saturday, Feb. 17 for a 1 p.m. clash.
