Women’s Basketball’s Streak Ends at Regis, 64-49

WESTON, Mass. – Suffolk women's basketball's winning ways came to a halt Wednesday night as the Rams fell to Regis, 64-49, at Higgins Court.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Suffolk was limited to just nine points over the first 10 minutes, which allowed Regis to take control early. Out of a 5-4 score that favored the Pride, the hosts took over with an 11-3 run to take a 16-7 lead with 1:17 left in the first frame. Jenni-Rose DiCecco's second hoop of the night came with 21 seconds left in the opening quarter though to cut the gap down to seven and start a momentum shift in the Rams favor. 

Emily Welling provided a spark early on in the second. The sophomore scored four quick points to keep Suffolk within striking distance before DiCecco buried her second behind-the-arc to pull the Rams within seven, 23-16, at the 7:02 minute mark. That trey and the junior's third of the game sandwiched a Gabriella DeComo layup that made it a two-point game at the midway point of the second quarter. 

See-saw action ensued as the teams traded buckets over the next five minutes. The tic-for-tac action had Regis ahead at the break, 30-25.  

Another slow quarter for Suffolk paid out in the Pride's favor as the Rams scored just eight points out of the locker room to fall behind 15, 48-33.  

With a lot of ground to make up, Natalie Fraioli started things out with a traditional three-point play within the first 15 seconds of the fourth frame. Rachel LaSaracina followed with a pair of freebies and Allie Lopes got in on the comeback action with a triple. Those eight unanswered points pulled the blue-and-gold within 10, but back-to-back layups from the Pride made it a 14-point game once again.  

Lopes started another Suffolk scoring stretch. The sophomore knocked down two treys during another 8-0 Rams run to make it a two-possession game, 55-49, with 6:16 to go.  

The Rams went ice cold from there though, without a bucket over the final six minutes, which allowed Regis to walk away with the 64-49 victory.  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

• DiCecco led the way with 15 points to go with four rebounds, three helpers, and three steals. 
• Lopes joined DiCecco in double-digits with 11. She shot 4-for-9 on the day with a 3-for-6 showing from three-point land. Lopes added four steals, two boards and one handout. 
• LaSaracina and Welling supplied eight and six points off the bench, respectively. The latter grabbed eight caroms and had a pair of assists and steals. 
• DeComo helped on both ends of the hardwood with six points, three rebounds, two dimes and one steal.  

NOTEWORTHY

• LaSaracina matched a career-high two free throws made. 
• Lopes matched a personal-best four steals. 
• Welling handed out a career-high two helpers.
