JWU Rallies Past Women’s Ice Hockey, 5-3

PAWTUCKET, R.I. – Three unanswered goals by Johnson & Wales proved to be the difference as Suffolk women's ice hockey fell to the Wildcats, 5-3, Saturday afternoon in Conference of New England (CNE) play at Lynch Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Suffolk snuck in front early as Katie Newkirk managed to tuck away a puck in traffic in front 1:50 into the action. Liliana Moose and Jenna Caballero helped the blue-and-gold get on the board as well. 
  • The early goal sent Suffolk into the break with the upperhand and the visitors lengthened the lead 3:16 into the second stanza. Bella Schmidt tipped in an attempt by Brooklyn Pizzimenti from the blue line past JWU's netminder Katelyn Cardoso to double the distance. Moose picked up her second assist of the night on the score. 
  • A response from the Wildcats' came late as they managed to put away two goals over a 2:07 span to even the playing field at 2-all at the second intermission.
  • The Rams kept the quick scoring going thanks to another tip-in this time of Cassie Borowski's stick. Laurel Potter and Pizzimenti aided in the goal that gave Suffolk a 3-2 edge less than a minute into the third. 
  • From there it was all JWU. Teagan Garfield leveled the playing field at the 6:12 mark, Marissa Lafferty gave the Wildcats the go-ahead at the 14:10 mark and Kailin Kane sealed Suffolk's setback with an empty netter with eight seconds remaining.  

NETMINDER NOTES

  • Katelyn Michals registered 46 saves in the setback. 
  • Katelyn Cardoso stopped 11 shots.  

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

  • Borowski, Newkirk and Schmidt were responsible for the Rams' goals with one each. 
  • Moose and Pizzimenti produced two assists each. 
  • Caballero and Potter recorded one helper apiece. 
  • Johnson & Wales controlled the past of play, outshooting Suffolk, 51-14. 
  • The Rams won the face-off battle, 31-24.  

NOTEWORTHY

  • Pizzimenti logged her first points as a Ram. 
  • Caballero has tallied points in back-to-back games and has one goal and one assist in that span. 
  • Schmidt (4g, 1), Potter (5a) and Newkirk (3g, 1a) stretched their point streaks to four games.
  • Moose dished out multiple assists for the second time this season. 
  • Borowski lengthened her point streak to two consecutive contests. In that stretch she has scored two goals.

Suffolk goes into a home-and-home series with No. 11 Endicott next weekend. The Rams will visit Beverly, Massachusetts Friday, Jan. 30 for a 6:00 p.m. showdown, before hosting the Gulls Saturday, Jan. 31 at 6:50 p.m. in Eastie.
