BOSTON, Mass. -- Emerson College scored in the second minute of
the game and built a 5-1 halftime edge as the Lions defeated Great
Northeast Athletic Conference Rival Suffolk University 9-1 on
Senior Day at Emerson's Rotch Field.
The Lions took the early lead on a header by Genna Opatut (So.,
Freehold, N.J.) off a cross from Lindsay D'Andrea (So., Medford,
N.J.) just over a minute into the contest. D'Andrea followed that
up just over two minutes later as she placed a shot in the lower
right corner of the net off a cross form Tamara Kearney ( Jr.,
Everett, Mass.).
Suffolk responded in the 23rd minute when Gina
Dean (So., Revere, Mass.) notched an unassisted tally that
eluded Emerson goal keeper Shayna Reich (Sr., West Hills, Calif.).
Suffolk then missed an opportunity to tie the game just
moments later when a shot on a breakaway by Kelsey
Cavaretta (FY, Marcellus, N.Y.) went just wide of the
net.
From that point on it was all Emerson. Breakaway goals by Amy
Gutierrez (Fr., Fredricksburg, Texas) and D'Andrea lifted the lead
to 4-0, and D'Andrea's third goal of the game came on a shot from
the center to the lower right side off an assist by Opatut in the
35th minute.
The second half proved to be more of the same as the Lions got
pair of goals from Katie Franzeo (Sr., Henderson, Nev.), and
D'Andrea's fourth goal of the game (to go along with a pair of
assists).
The final Emerson tally came off the foot of Eileen McIntire (Sr.,
Alpharetta, Ga.) on a penalty kick in the 87th minute.
Emerson dominated the statistics in the game with a 35-3 advantage
in shots. The Lions took six corner kicks to three for the
Rams. Suffolk was called for offsides one time and Emerson
committed three offsides violations.
Suffolk goal keeper Emily Joyce (Jr., Easton,
Mass.) had a busy day in the net, making 15 saves. Reich had
one stop for the Lions.
