Senior Leslie Hayden (Ross, Calif.) had a record setting day on Saturday in Suffolk's 4-0 victory over Norwich University on Saturday afternoon. Hayden broke a pair of Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Women's Soccer career records becoming the all-time leader in goals scored and also set the mark for goals scored in conference regular season games.
Hayden scored her 69th career goal in the 56th minute of Saturday's contest as she converted on a penalty kick becoming the all-time leading goal scorer among GNAC players. The goal broke the conference's previous mark set of 68 set by Patrice Merendina, who played for Johnson & Wales University from 1999-2002.
Earlier in the game Hayden notched her 17th goal of the season in the contest's fifth minute as she eluded the Cadets defense scoring her 41st career GNAC goal, surpassing the previous record of 40 set by Nicole Zielinski, who played for Simmons College from 2003-2006.
Thus far in 2011, Hayden is currently the GNAC's leading goal scorer with 18 and her 40 points also leads the league. She has now scored 11 goals in the Rams past four contests.
It is the third time in her career that Hayden has reached the 40-point plateau.
In 60 career games played, Hayden's 69 goals and 27 assists total for 165 points. That total ranks fifth best in GNAC history, while her 2.75 points per game total is currently the second best average among GNAC scorers ever. Merendina also holds the GNAC record for career-points with 171.
In 42 career GNAC games Hayden has amassed 102 points (42 goals and 18 assists), the second highest total ever behind Zielinski who registered 112 points for league games.
Hayden has continued to make her mark throughout her four-year career at Suffolk as she has dominated opposing defenses. She averages 1.1 goals per game and has scored nine hat tricks in her career, including three this season. 12 of her 69 goals have proven to be the game-winning goal in Suffolk victories.
In 2008, as a freshman she was tied for the GNAC lead with 17 goals, while her 37 points was the top total in the conference. In GNAC games that year Hayden scored 13 times, which ties for the fifth most all-time in a season for league totals. Three of her 17 goals that year were game-winners for the Rams.
Hayden's sophomore year marked the only time in her career that she reached the 20-goal mark for a single season. She became just the eleventh person in conference history to reach that feat. Her 1.33 goals per game average was ranked 7th best among all NCAA Division-III players for that season. The highlight of the season came on October 14, 2009 in a non-conference matchup against Mass. Maritime Academy as she scored six times in a Suffolk victory becoming just the 21st player in Division-III history to score at least six goals in one game.
As a junior Hayden made the transition from scorer to playmaker. With an influx of talented freshmen forwards, Hayden was asked to switch positions moving her back to midfield. She responded by setting the GNAC single-season record for assists in league play with 14. She finished the season with 14 goals and 17 assists a total of 45 points, a career-high. She ranked second among all NCAA Division-III players with the 17 assist total and was ranked 20th among all scorers with a 2.65 points per game average. The results helped as the Rams finished the season with a 13-4-1 overall record and earned the program's first postseason appearance into the ECAC Division-III New England Tournament. They also compiled the best regular season record in the GNAC with a 12-2 mark.
On October 25, 2010 Hayden became the eighth player in GNAC history to reach the 50-goal milestone doing so in just her 45th career game played.
Hayden has been recognized by the Great Northeast Athletic Conference as an all-conference selection in all three of her years at Suffolk. In 2008 she was named GNAC Rookie of the Year. As a freshman and sophomore she was also named to the GNAC All-Sportsmanship team, an honor that was voted by her teammates. She has also served as a team captain the past three seasons.
Suffolk has three games remaining for the 2011 campaign. Suffolk will play their least regular season home game on Wednesday evening as they host Rivier College at 6:00pm at George Dilboy Stadium in Somerville, before rounding out GNAC regular season play at Emerson College for a 2:00pm match on Saturday. Suffolk will play Gordon College on October 25 in non-league action in the regular season finale.
