The Suffolk University Women's Tennis team (7-3, 6-2 GNAC) picked up back to back wins this week to move into second place in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) standings.
The Rams earned a tough 5-4 victory over the Johnson & Wales Wildcats (5-6, 3-3 GNAC) on Saturday a day after they defeated the Mount Ida College Mustangs (3-5, 2-3 GNAC) by a 9-0 score.
Freshman Jane Skorobogatova (Novosibirsk, Russia) won all four of her matches on the week (singles and doubles combined) as she pushes her singles record to 7-0 on the season. Skorobogatova was a 6-2, 6-1 winner in the top singles spot on Friday and then picked 6-3, 6-1 victories on Saturday in the third singles spot.
The Rams took advantage of strong singles play as they won four of their six matches on Saturday which gave them the edge. Senior Alex Hernandez-Vallant (Newton, Mass.) was a winner in the top singles spot, defeating the Wildcats Haley Nutter in straight 6-0 sets. Junior Lauren Cameron (Kingston, Jamaica) returned to action for 6-2, 6-0 victories in the second singles spot. Junior Kelly Conrad (Lanstuhl, Germany) was a winner in the four position winning 6-4, 6-1.
Skorobogatova and junior Rebecca Copeland (Bristol, R.I.) grabbed the match deciding victory in the second doubles set as they topped Victoria Ricciardi and Tammy Saunders 8-2.
Conrad was also a multiple winner this week as she won her other singles match, 6-0, 6-3 in the number two position on Friday.
Freshman Melissa Chermley (Walpole, Mass.), Georgia Ward (Exeter, R.I.), Julianna Riconda (Brewster, N.Y.) and Stacey Politis (Saugus, Mass.) were all multiple winners on Friday.
Chermley and Riconda partnered for an 8-2 win in the second doubles spot. Chermley won her singles match 6-1, 6-0 in the fourth position while Riconda was a 6-1, 6-0 winner in the six spot.
Politis and Ward were also 8-2 winners in the third doubles game. Ward was a 6-0, 6-3 winner in the third singles match, while Politis was victorious in consecutive 6-1 sets in the five position.
The Rams will wrap up the 2010 regular season on Wednesday as they host UMass-Boston at Buckingham, Browne and Nichols.
