The Suffolk University Women's Tennis team will take on the Johnson & Wales University Wildcats in the first round of the 2011 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) playoffs.
The quarterfinal matchup will begin on Thursday after being pushed back a day due to inclement weather. The fourth-seeded Wildcats enter the six-team tournament with a 5-3 GNAC record and 8-6 overall mark, while Suffolk boasts a 4-4 in-league mark and 4-6 overall record as the fifth ranked team in the conference.
Johnson & Wales topped Suffolk in their only meeting this season in a close 5-4 back on October 8. JWU trailed 2-1 after doubles play with freshman Samantha Jo Borr (Westfield, N.J.) and fellow rookie Stephanie Piperis (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) recording a 9-7 win at the No. 1 doubles spot. In singles play, the two took wins at No.1 with a commanding 6-0, 6-0 victory by Borr and a 6-2, 6-4 win by Peperis at the No. 2 spot. Peperis' match would prove to be the deciding one as the contest was tied 4-4 before that decision for the Wildcats. Freshman Elizabeth Sammelbraun (Evanston, Ill.) had a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 5 for JWU while sophomore Ansley Sego (Naperville, Ill.) wrapped up the singles victories for JWU, winning 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 6 spot. Freshman Adrianna Garrett (Plymouth, Mass.) recorded a pair of wins for Suffolk, teaming with senior Rebecca Copeland (Bristol, R.I.) for an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles. She also posted a 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 4 singles in the loss for the Rams.
