BOSTON – Over the next few weeks, GoSuffolkRams.com will take a look at the teams, student-athletes and special honorees to be inducted into the Suffolk University Athletics Hall of Fame this October. Our next installment features the creator of the 1K club for women’s basketball, Sheryl Scanlon ’85.
In a decade where Suffolk women’s basketball made its name known, there was one player who was there to start it all. Scanlon, a four-year letterwinner, has certainly left her footprint in Suffolk women's basketball history as she was the first player in Rams blue-and-gold to not only reach, but surpass the 1,000-point plateau, ending her career with 1,148 points. The 5-foot-10 forward is currently sixth in program history in points (1,148), second in points per game (16.4) and fifth in field goals made (408) and field goals attempted (1,205).
Scanlon netted 300-plus points in a single-season twice first as a freshman (311; 1981-82) and again as a junior (300; 1983-84). Her 18.8 points per outing as a junior lands sixth on the Rams’ single-season charts, while her total 300 points that year accounted for 32.8 percent of Suffolk’s offense that put together a 9-7 overall record.
Scanlon is the seventh women’s basketball player to be inducted into the Suffolk University Athletics Hall of Fame, including multi-sport athletes.
The 2015 Hall of Fame class features six Rams, one distinguished team and two special honorees to join the 35 existing Suffolk University Athletics Hall of Famers.
The 2015 Suffolk Athletics Hall of Fame Induction Banquet will be held on Saturday, Oct. 3 at 12 p.m. at 20 Somerset. Tickets to the luncheon and induction ceremony for the Class of 2015 are available here.
