Salbego Shoves Complete-Game, Baseball Takes Game One over WNE, 10-5

EAST BOSTON – Behind a nine-inning, complete-game effort from Pierce Salbego and 13 hits off eight different bats, Suffolk baseball secured a 10-5 game one win over Conference of New England Western New England foe Sunday afternoon at East Boston Memorial Park.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Max Martin led off Suffolk's offense with a single up the middle, stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball. Colin Flynn worked a walk to reach and swiped second to put a pair of runners in scoring position. Max Iorio collected the first RBI of the day with a ground out to second that scored Max Martin, before Flynn scored thanks to Chris Cimino's base hit to left that gave the Rams a 2-0 edge.  

Two innings later, Suffolk stretched the margin to 7-0. With the bases chucked thanks to back-to-back singles by Iorio and Cimino and a hit by pitch from Alex Sorenti-BurnsSebastian Lampert cleared the bags with a double to center. Sam Armbruster traded places with Lampert with a. two-bagger of his own and scored thanks to Mike Mullaney's single to left.  

The Golden Bears got on the board in the top of the fourth. Jack Loftus slugged a one-out solo shot to right field to give the visitors their first run of the day. WNE that put all the ducks in the pond thanks to a walk, hit by pitch and single to set up Jack Gamache's two-run double to center that cut the distance down to four, 7-3.  

Western New England made up more ground in its next turn at the dish as Loftus went yard for the second time in as many plate appearances. This time he brought in Ryan Montini, who singled, to trim Suffolk's advance to a pair, 7-5. 

Suffolk built a five-run gap back up in the home half of the sixth. Flynn and Iorio singled and were pushed over thanks to Cimino's sac bunt. Flynn came in on a wild pitch and Iorio scored thanks to a ground out by Lampert. Sorenti-Burns, who walked and moved to second on Lampert's RBI ground out, came around thanks to Armbruster's second double of the day, which gave the Rams a 10-5 cushion. 

Salbego took care of business from there as he let just one Golden Bears' base runner the rest of the way. The senior put an exclamation mark on the victory as the right-handed hurler clinched the victory with back-to-back strikeouts, looking followed by swinging.  

PITCHERS PICTURE

  • Salbego compiled a five-run, eight-hit, four-walk, seven-strikeout, complete-game effort. 
  • Jared Kuryan took the loss as he gave up seven runs on seven hits and three walks in 3.0 innings. 
  • Tanner Wall allowed three runs on five hits and one walk in 3.0 frames of relief. 
  • Lucas Kamoen shoved 2.0 inning of scoreless action with one hit and one walk let up with three punchouts.  

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

  • Iorio went 3-for-5 with one double, one RBI and two runs scored. 
  • Cimino contributed a 3-for-4 effort with one RBI, one run, one sac and two stolen bases.
  • Armbruster's two hits were both one-run doubles. He finished with two RBI and scored once. 
  • Lampert brought in four runs on one hit, a double, and scored one run. 
  • Flynn added one hit, wo runs scored, two walks and one stolen base. 
  • Mullaney tallied one hit and one RBI. 
  • Max Martin produced one hi8t and one run. 
  • Sorenti-Burns scored two runs and walked twice.  

NOTEWORTHY

  • Suffolk leveled the all-time series with WNE, 23-23. 
  • The Rams are now 5-11 in the Anthony Del Prete era against the Golden bears.
  • Suffolk defeated WNE for the first time since April 14, 2024, a 6-3 decision. 
  • Cimino tied his Suffolk-best three-hit effort. 
  • Salbego threw his third complete-game of the season, fourth of his collegiate career.
