NORTON, Mass. – Suffolk baseball dropped a non-conference decision at Wheaton, 14-3, Thursday afternoon. 

THE BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED
A four-run first inning by Wheaton forced Suffolk to play from behind early on.  

The teams traded one run in the third to keep the gap at four runs. Suffolk's scoring came behind a one-run single by Max Martin. He brought in Sam Armbruster, who singled and reached second thanks to Cole Hilliard's double down the left field line.  

The Rams trimmed two in the top of the fourth. Max Iorio sent the ball over the right field fence to the get the inning underway. An error by the Lyons' shortstop let Chris Cimino reach safely and Alex Sorenti-Burns pushed him over. Both runners advanced 90 feet on a wild pitch before Armbruster's long out to center scored Cimino to make it a 5-3 game.  

The score stood still until the seventh when Wheaton scored five runs to stretched its advantage to 10-3.   

An inning later, the Lyons lengthened their lead even further thanks to four runs to turn it into a 14-3 margin, which remained as the Rams sat down in order in the top of the ninth.  

PITCHERS PICTURE

  • Colin McNeal took the loss as he let up five runs, one earned, on seven hits and three walks with two strikeouts in 5.0 innings. 
  • Nick Rubin (3 R, 2 H, 2 BB), Cam Martin (2 R, 3 H, 1 BB, 1 K) and Will Talbert (4 R, 1 H, 4 BB, 2 K) all worked 1.0 inning of relief for Suffolk. 
  • Evan Yakavonis earned the decision behind 2.0 innings of scoreless relief with two hits and one walk allowed. 
  • Jack Ritchie started and let up three runs, two earned, on six hits with four punchouts over 4.0 frames. 
  • Liam Goldthwaite (1K) and Josh Fisher (3K) came out of the Lyons' pen for 2.0 innings and 1.0 innings, respectively. ] 

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

  • Hilliard went 2-for-3 with one double. 
  • Colin Flynn put together a 2-for-4 effort with one stolen base to his credit. 
  • Iorio provided one a hit, a dinger, one RBI and one run scored.
  • Martin added one hit and one RBI. 
  • Armbruster tallied one hit, one RBI, one run and one sac. 
  • Sorenti-Burns supplied one hit and one walk. 
  • Cimino scored one run. 

NOTEWORTHY

  • Iorio had his second homer of the year.

Suffolk concludes the regular season Saturday, May 3 with a doubleheader against Hartford.
