Hartford Hands Women’s Basketball 62-42 CNE Loss

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Suffolk women's basketball took its first Conference of New England (CNE) setback of the season as Hartford took down the Rams, 62-42, Saturday afternoon at Chase Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • From a 4-4 tie, Hartford rattled off a 12-2 run to put the Rams in a 10-point hole, 16-6, with 17 seconds left in the first frame. Khaya Skene sunk a triple with seconds later to trim the margin back to single digits as the game transitioned to the second stanza. 
  • The Hawks poured in the first hoop into the second quarter, which forced Ed Leyden to take a timeout. The Rams figured things out of the huddle as they compiled a 9-1 stretch to pull within one, 19-18, with 3:12 to go before halftime. That run featured four points from Jordan Moreau and three by Ava Thurman
  • See-saw action made up the final three minutes of the first half, which sent Suffolk into the locker room down three, 25-22. 
  • Suffolk battled back early in the third and managed to sneak in front, 32-30, when Thurman converted a jumper at the 5:57 mark. 
  • The lead flipped flopped, and the score tied twice before Hartford took over with a quarter-ending 13-2 run to take a 48-37 advantage over the Rams. 
  • The final 10 minutes was all Hartford as it outscored Suffolk, 14-5 for the 62-42 final.  

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

  • Moreau led the way offensively as she poured in 15 points thanks in large part to a 9-for-10 showing from the charity stripe. She added three boards, one assist and one block to her stat line. 
  • Thurman tallied a near double-double with 11 points and nine caroms with one helper, one swat and one steal. 
  • Suffolk outrebounded Hartford, 39-37.  

NOTEWORTHY

  • Thurman had a career-high 11 points.
