Jeff Stone, the Head Athletic Trainer at Suffolk University, was inducted into the Athletic Trainers of Massachusetts (ATOM) Hall of Fame on January 8, 2011. The induction ceremony took place during the Massachusetts State Meeting at the 63rd Annual Meeting for the Eastern Athletic Trainers Association at the Loews Hotel in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Stone was inducted into the Hall of Fame alongside Nairi Melkonian, Head Athletic Trainer of the Brooks School (North Andover, Mass.) Fourteen athletic trainers have been awarded with this prestigious honor, which was established in 2005. Jack Baynes, former Head Athletic Trainer at Northeastern University did the honors inducting the pair into the Hall of Fame. Baynes was an inaugural member of the ATOM Hall of Fame, a member of the Class of 2005.
Stone has been a member of ATOM since its’ inception in 1981. He was President from 1994-1996, Secretary from 1989-1992 and served on ATOM’s Executive Board for 10 years. He was the ATOM Athletic Trainer of the Year in 1992, and was awarded the Kerkor “Koko” Kassabian Service Award (for meritorious service to the Athletic Training profession in Massachusetts) in 2009. During his tenure, he was also the Association’s Newsletter Editor.
Stone, a resident of Ashland, recently completed his six-year tenure as Director of District One- New England, representing over 2000 athletic trainers and athletic training students in New England. He also served as the region’s representative to the Board of Directors of the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) from 2004-2010.
A 1976 graduate of Northeastern University, Boston-Bouve College, Stone has over 35 years of sports medical experience Stone is currently the Medical Coordinator for the Bay State Games, and was named to its Hall of Fame in 2006. He has worked as an athletic trainer at Ashland High School, Framingham State College, Natick High School, Marian High School and the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center over a 30-plus year career that continues presently at Suffolk University, a position he had held since 2004. In 2008, Stone was named Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Athletic Trainer of the Year, it was the first year the award was given out.
