Sophomore Bryan Rooney (Canton, Mass.) netted a pair of goals, while senior Patrick Greene (Weymouth, Mass.) added a goal and three assists to lead Stonehill to a 7-3 non-league college ice hockey victory over Suffolk Saturday evening at the Allied Veterans Memorial Rink.
The visiting Skyhawks (5-6-1) jumped out to an early 3-0 advantage just 12:49 into the contest, as tallies off the sticks of Rooney, junior Christopher Gorovitz (Framingham, Mass.) and freshman Stephen Balsamo (Atkinson, N.H.) staked Stonehill to a three-goal cushion after the opening 20 minutes of action. The host Rams (2-8) sliced their deficit to one over the first eight and-a-half minutes of the second stanza on a power play goal by freshman Scott Mathieu (Taunton, Mass.) that was followed by junior Andrew Flynn's (Stamford, Conn.) marker, but sophomore Andrew Miller (Oxford, Conn.) extended the Skyhawks' lead back to two with a shorthanded goal that came with 5:41 remaining in the period. Freshman Kevin Aufiero's (Canton, Mass.) tally 6:30 into the final frame enabled Stonehill to regain a three-goal advantage at 5-2, and after a power play marker off the stick of sophomore Charlie McGinnis (Hanover, Mass.) sliced Suffolk's deficit back to two just 2:08 later, goals off the sticks of Rooney and Greene (the latter coming on the power play) over the final 9:38 of action accounted for the final score.
Miller and Aufiero each added a goal and an assist in the victory for Stonehill, which also received a pair of helpers from junior Dana Borges (Taunton, Mass.) as well as single assists off the sticks of junior J.J. Sabin (Milton, Mass.), sophomores Bill Carey (Weymouth, Mass.) and Garrett Lessard (East Sandwich, Mass.) as well as freshmen J.B. Sarra (Colts Neck, N.J.) and Fabio Cuetara (Irvine, Calif.) in extending its unbeaten streak to four straight (3-0-1). McGinnis collected a goal and an assist in the setback for Suffolk, which also received a pair of assists from sophomore Ryan DesRoches (Salem, N.H.) as well as single helpers off the sticks of sophomores Max Barron (St. Louis, Mo.), Josh Goryl (Rochester, Mich.) and Jon Stauffer (Lansdale, Pa.).
Freshman Chris Tasiopoulos (Norwell, Mass.) picked up the win in goal for Stonehill with a 33-save effort, while sophomore Cam Kelley (Brighton, Mass.) made 13 stops over the first 46-plus minutes in net in the setback for Suffolk, which also received three saves from freshman Brett Roman (Rock Tavern, N.Y.) over the final 13-plus minutes of play as the Rams outshot the Skyhawks by a 36-23 margin for the contest.
Suffolk will be idle until Saturday, January 7th when the Rams head to Biddeford, Maine to take on the University of New England in a non-league outing that faces off at 7:00 p.m., while Stonehill will be idle until Sunday, January 15th when the Skyhawks take on Becker at Thayer Arena in Warwick, R.I. in a non-league match-up that begins at 6:00 p.m.
