Roger Williams Hands Women's Basketball First Loss

The Roger Williams University Hawks (3-0) snapped the Suffolk University Women's Basketball team's four game winning streak with a 58-53 victory at the Regan Gymnasium on Monday evening.

Freshman Lauren Stumper (Simsbury, Conn.) hit a three-pointer with forty four seconds remaining to put the Hawks up by an eight point margin which sealed the fate of the Rams as Roger Williams moves to 3-0 to start the season.

Sophomore Kaitlyn Bovee (Berlin, Conn.) had a team-high 14 points going 5-for-8 from the field, while junior Alexandria Lanieri (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) scored 10 of her 12 points in the second half for the Hawks.

Senior Mary Garon (Auburn, N.H.) led all scorers with 16 points on the evening for the Rams, while senior Meghan Black (Roslindale, Mass.) had 10 points.

The back and forth game saw seven lead changes and was tied at six different points throughout the contest, before the Hawks finally broke away for good on a Bovee three-point shot with less than four minutes remaining to give the visitors a 51-48 edge. Lanieri would follow her up hitting a shot down low to give the Hawks a five-point edge seconds later before Bovee and Stumper put the game away in the final minute.

Suffolk held a 27-25 edge at halftime, but the Rams struggled in the second half shooting 31 percent from the field as a team and were outworked on the glass 20-15 in the period.

Laneiri led the Hawks in rebounds with nine in the contest, while junior Lindsey Rogers (Gloucester, Mass.) had nine for the Rams to go along with her eight points.

Roger Williams will be back in action on Thursday evening as they host Eastern Nazarene College in The Commonwealth Coast Action (TCCC) at 6:00pm. Suffolk will travel to Framingham State University for a non-conference tilt in a battle of the Rams beginning at 6:00pm.
