The Suffolk University Women's Soccer team was awarded a Gold medal for Ethics/Sportsmaship by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America for the 2008 season. Suffolk was one of seven winners of this award which was handed out to both men's and women's college programs across the country. This group included NCAA Divisions I, II, and III as well as NJCAA and NAIA programs. Suffolk's Women's Soccer was the only NCAA Dvision III program in New England to earn this honor.
The team was recognized for completing the 14-game 2008 season without receiving one yellow or red penalty card. "Our student-athletes are taught to play hard and also to play fair," said Suffolk's head coach Ernst Cleophat."I'm very proud of our team for being honored with this award."
The awards will be given out to the recipients at the NSCAA/Adidas College Coaches Awards Reception on Thursday, January 15 in St. Louis, MO. The Ethics/Sportsmanship Award is one of the most difficult to achieve in the entire NSCAA awards program.
Freshman Leslie Hayden (Ross, CA) was named to the Great Northeast Athletic Conference All-Sportsmanship team for the 2008 season. Hayden was also named Rookie of the Year in the GNAC.
