Women's Soccer Top Emerson, 3-2

The Suffolk University Women's Soccer team (7-2-1, 6-2 GNAC) held on for their seventh win of the season, and sixth in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action this season defeating the Emerson College Lions (2-8, 2-5 GNAC) by a 3-2 margin on Wednesday evening.

Freshman Gabrielle Balestrier (Mohnton, Penn.) scored twice in a twenty-two second span to build a 3-1 lead as Suffolk held on for their third straight victory. Balestrier has now scored five goals in the Rams past three games.

Emerson got on the board first as junior Cameron Trobaugh (Gales Ferry, Conn.) nailed a header off of a corner kick in the game's 37th minute.

The Rams would answer two minutes later as freshman Monica Wolf (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) hit a shot from 15 yards out after taking a cross-pass from junior Leslie Hayden (Ross, Calif.).

Balestrier would score the eventual game winner in the game's 60th minute as Hayden once again set up another Rams goal. Balestrier would connect on a header for her ninth goal of the year.

Emerson would cut the lead in half as sophomore Jennifer Stafford (Lake George, N.Y.) was left alone wide open in front of the net as she was setup by Trobaugh.

The Lions made the game interesting in the final minute. After a Suffolk foul freshman Amber Bigwood (Chepachet, R.I.) would send a towering shot off the free kick that was knocked down by Suffolk goalkeeper Emily Joyce (Easton, Mass.) to squash the Emerson scoring opportunity and preserve the Rams victory.

Joyce made three saves earning her seventh victory of the year.

Freshman Jill Dean (Lynn, Mass.) made 10 saves for the Lions in the loss.

Balestrier finished the game with two goals and an assist.

Both teams will be back in GNAC action this weekend on Saturday. Emerson will travel to Johnson & Wales to take on the Wildcats at 1:00pm, while Suffolk travel to Albertus Magnus to face the Falcons at 1:00pm.
